Strong together: When learning becomes a challenge!
For many trainees, acquiring theoretical learning content presents a significant challenge. The problems are diverse: from learning disabilities and psychological problems to language barriers and family challenges – there are many factors that can make learning more difficult. Although every trainee is unique and has individual needs, there are still many ways to help them overcome their diverse learning challenges and support them on their path to successfully completing their vocational training.
Job-specific language support
Language is known to be the key to the world, as it is a prerequisite for social participation and thus also for a successful educational career. Unfortunately, many trainees struggle in precisely this area for a variety of reasons and must learn to cope with the challenges of using language. Our internal efforts aim to give all trainees the opportunity to develop and improve their language skills so that students can better understand learning content and thus participate more actively in class. To achieve this, we work closely with the FONS Academy. The FONS Academy offers a weekly vocational language course at the OSZ Kraftfahrzeugtechnik, specially designed for prospective automotive mechanics technicians. The vocational language courses focus on improving trainees' German language skills and acquiring or expanding job-related vocabulary.
Subject-specific support
In addition to language difficulties, acquiring the subject-specific theory often presents a hurdle for students to overcome. Of course, we can help with this as well. Organized by AsAflex (Assistierte Ausbildung flexibel), a tutoring session is offered twice a week to review and deepen the content of the course. In these tutoring sessions, the trainees receive individual support from qualified specialists. The tutors take the time to identify their weaknesses and develop specific learning strategies tailored to their needs. This helps trainees reach their full potential.
Catching up after failing the final exam
Despite the support offered, it may happen that a trainee fails the final exam after the end of the regular training period. The reasons for this are varied. However, another internal school support mechanism is also available here: students have the opportunity to register for so-called repeat classes. In these classes, the trainee is specifically prepared for the repeat exam, and the teacher also helps them maintain their motivation to continue and prepare for the upcoming exam. The students attend classes two days a week.
Challenges in the extracurricular area
Inadequate performance should not be viewed exclusively in the academic context. The personal environment of trainees also has a significant influence on learning success. This is where the expertise of our school social worker and the guidance counselor at the OSZ Automotive Technology Center comes in, supporting students with their personal problems. The school social worker and guidance counselor work closely with the relevant teachers and school administration to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment.
As a trainer, your influence on those affected is significant. Therefore, motivate your trainees to accept the support services, help them register, and create space for them to take advantage of the support.
