Strong together: When learning becomes a challenge!
For many trainees, acquiring theoretical learning content is a major challenge. The problems are diverse: from learning disorders to psychological problems to language barriers or family challenges - there are many factors that can make learning difficult. Although every trainee is unique and has individual needs, there are still many ways to help them with their diverse learning problems and to support them on their way to successfully completing their vocational training.
Job-specific language support
Language is known to be the key to the world, because it is a prerequisite for social participation and thus also for a successful educational career. Unfortunately, many trainees have difficulties in precisely this area for a variety of reasons and have to learn to deal with the challenges of dealing with language. Our internal school efforts aim to give all trainees the opportunity to develop and improve their language skills so that students can better understand learning content and thus participate more actively in lessons. In order to be able to implement this, we have been working closely with the educational provider WIPA GmbH for several years. WIPA offers a professional language course at the OSZ Kraftfahrzeugtechnik, specially designed for prospective automotive mechtronics engineers, which takes place twice a week. The main aim of the professional language courses is to improve the trainees' German language skills and to acquire or expand a job-related vocabulary.
Subject-specific support
In addition to difficulties in the language area, the acquisition of specialist theory is often a hurdle for the students that must be overcome. Of course, we can help here too. Organized by AsAflex (Assisted Training Flexible), a tutoring course is offered twice a week to pick up on lesson content and go into it in more depth. The trainees are individually supported in these tutoring courses by qualified specialists. The tutors take the time to identify the trainees' weak points and develop specific learning strategies that are tailored to the needs of the students. In this way, the trainees can be helped to fully exploit their actual performance potential.
Catching up after failing the final exam
Despite the support offered, it can happen that the trainee does not pass the final exam after the end of the regular training period. There are many reasons for this. But here too, another internal school support mechanism comes into play: the students have the opportunity to register for the so-called repeat classes. In these classes, the trainee is once again specifically prepared for the repeat exam, but the teacher also helps them not to lose motivation to continue and prepare for the upcoming exam. The students are taught two days a week.
Challenges in the extracurricular area
Inadequate performance should not be viewed exclusively in the school context. The trainees' private environment also has a major influence on their learning success. This is where the expertise of our school social worker and the advisory teacher at the OSZ Automotive Technology comes in to support students with their personal problems. The school social worker and the advisory teacher work closely with the teachers concerned and the school management to create a safe, supportive and inclusive school environment.
As a trainer, your influence on those concerned is great. So motivate your trainees to accept the support offers, help them register and create space so that the trainee can also accept the help.
